Ok, I've been annoyed by this since the very first day I've been using my Mac Mini: the mouse feels weird, very weird. Broken actually! Sleep escape mac os.

Part of my problem was the Bluetooth operating range, which I could only fix by moving the mac nearer to where I usually use my mouse in my living room.

However, the core problem is still the acceleration curve. When you move the mouse on OSX, it first moves verrrry slowly, so you move it faster and when you reach a certain speed the mouse suddenly accelerates like crazy.

This is not controllable through the 'tracking speed' slider in the control panel. The tracking speed is only the fastest the mouse will go. (And you can actually make it go even faster!) But my problem is not with how fast it would eventually get. My problem is with how freaking slow it initially starts (even at max traking speed).

Solutions

Apple's been stubbornly unresponsive to this problem, as they always are, especially when the mouse is at stake (took them 10 years to aknowlege the need for a right button.. good luck with acceleration!)

This blog entry is a little different from my usual. Normally I have handy tips and tricks for the average user. 2020 by Jimmy Obomsawin. Mac OS X Tiger: 10.4.

Fortunately, since the last time I checked (errr.. 2005 ), third party fixes now work well on intel Macs.

Check these out:

  • USB Overdrive (no bluetooth support, but you can try it as long as you need)
  • SteerMouse (15 days trial only but it can handle the bluetooth Mighty mouse)

Since I'm trying to do some desk work right now and have a wired mouse, I'm currently and happily using USB Overdrive with these settings:

Little jimmy mac os 11
  • Speed: 120 dpi (feels like Windows fast ;))
  • Acceleration: 50% (no longer feels like sticking to the mouse pad ;))

I'll try SteerMouse when I go back to 'Media Player' configuration..

Jimmy is a very talented musician and an all around good guy. He was personable and intuitive enough to read the crowd. He even stuck around a little extra to talk with the birthday boy about their shared taste in music. He was the perfect addition to this 60th birthday party!

Jimmy Mac played for three hours for a kids' birthday party we hosted this summer. He played classic rock songs that everyone knew, and that the kids enjoyed dancing to. He came dressed in a fun, bright tie-dyed shirt, and with his own chair/microphone/speakers. He was very engaged with the audience. He had special moments for the kids, he walked the yard to interact with everyone, and when all the kids left, he sat down with the adults and played requests.

Jimmy Mac was wonderful. He was diligent, prepared, on time, dependable, extremely friendly and most of all, he was a great singer and guitarist. He engaged his audience and everyone had a great time. Thank you Jimmy, for helping create such a terrific party.

I had a wonderful time performing for Agi's Baby Shower.
There were sing-a longs in the kitchen, dancing in the den, and those ladies out on the back deck...
They were pretty wild singing and dancing to Twist & Shout.
'Well, shake it up baby now...'

Little Jimmy Acosta

The material was not what I expected. I requested 'summer music' for 70-90 yea- olds. I expected Jimmy Buffet, Beach Boys, Paul Anka, etc. While I enjoyed Jimmy's performance (I'm younger), the feedback was that very few people had heard any of the songs, except 2 by Elvis and a couple others. For example, no one at my table of 10 had heard 'Norwegian Wood' or 'The Boxer' before except me. Also, he kept flipping through his music - I believed that to be looking for just the right tunes - but it was distracting.

This event was a big success. It was a dinner and concert at a 55 years and older community.
So in my one hour show, I squeezed it something for everyone. And I was rewarded with a lot of sing-a-long fun and generous applause.

For those in their 80's and 90's I had: Oh Susanna, King of the Road, This land Is Your Land, etc.
For those in their 70's I played: Elvis, Beatles, Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.
And for the youngsters in their late 50's and 60's I had: The Eagles, Chicago, and Van Morrison.

And of course, for the summertime theme I played: Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett, Ventures, and the biggest hit of the evening, Miserlou by surf king Dick Dale.

Everyone (including me) had a great time, and I would gladly come back for an encore next year.

Jimmy Mac came to our school's Writers' Week. He shared stories about his life, his creative perspective, and his songs (which are beautiful, by the way). He's a fun, generous, easy-going presence who plays wonderfully and has a great message for kids.
